For this project, I wanted to explore mindfulness and presence. My overall task is “How to be present.” I made my manual in the form of an interactive guided website. For the website, I created graphics and diagrams to go alongside each of the emotions I wanted to explore. I also added quotes and hidden embedded links to an array of resources related to the topics I was exploring. My goal was to create an immersive experience for people to explore new concepts and learn supplemental information about their emotions and the importance of presence. For this project, I drew from a variety of sources. One of my favorite books is The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. I included several quotes from him throughout the site. I also enjoy Alan Watts’ lectures. Both Tolle and Watts talk about mindfulness and presence often. I also drew from artists like James Turrel, Dan Flavin, Agnes Pelton, and Elsworth Kelly for my visual components. I appreciate the way these artists explore color, form, and light. I find that I experience their work in a meditative way, which is what I hope someone gets through using my site as well. I researched the psychology of colors in order to create different atmospheres for each emotion; for example, I chose yellow for the “sad” page in order to counteract, since yellow is associated with happiness. I hope to have this as an ongoing piece.
